The Sacral Chakra Influence

The sacral chakra is located in the low abdomen in front of sacrum just below the navel. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is Svadishthana which means “sweetness” and is often referred to as our pleasure centre. Therefore, this chakra’s unique benefits are that of sensation and pleasure. This chakra is associated with the colour orange and is depicted as a six-petalled lotus flower with a white circle of water embedded in the image.

The energetics of the sacral chakra develop between the ages of 6-24 months of age, however, it’s between the ages of 8-14 years of age when we primarily express ourselves through this chakra. As the energy from the root chakra moves up into the second energy centre, we begin to shape our core beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. This is a critical time when we are gathering information from our parents, siblings, teachers, peers and environment which helps form our core beliefs. Whether we are conscious of them or not, our beliefs help forge our individual personality and reactions to life. They influence issues such as self-love, self-esteem and our ability to feel safe in the world.

Regardless of the beliefs that we took on as children, our future can be different. All limiting beliefs can be healed when we start to become more compassionate, kind and loving towards our selves.

Yoga Postures to open the Sacral Chakra

We invite you to repeat your favourite sacral chakra affirmation while holding the following yoga poses. Doing so will create a strong connection between your body and mind. Repeat the affirmations out loud or quietly to yourself while holding the postures.

Low Lunge: From Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana), exhale and step your right foot forward between your hands, aligning the right knee over the heel. Then lower your left knee to the floor and, keeping the right knee fixed in place, slide the left back until you feel a comfortable stretch in the left front thigh and groin. Turn the top of your left foot to the floor.

Inhale and lift your torso to upright. As you do, sweep your arms out to the sides and up, perpendicular to the floor. Draw the tailbone down toward the floor and lift your pubic bone toward your navel. Lift your chest from the firmness of your shoulder blades against the back torso.

Take your head back and look up, being careful not to jam the back of your neck. Reach your pinkies toward the ceiling. Hold for a minute, exhale your torso back to the right thigh and your hands to the floor, and turn your back toes under. With another exhale, lift your left knee off the floor and step back to Adho Mukha Svanasana. Repeat with the left foot forward for the same length of time.

Pigeon Pose: From all fours, bring your right knee forward towards your right wrist. Depending on your body it may be just behind your wrist or to the outer or the inner edge of it. Your right ankle will be somewhere in front of your left hip.

Slide your left leg back and point your toes, your heel is pointing up to the ceiling. Scissor your hips together, by drawing your legs in towards each other. Use some support under your right buttock if needed, to keep your hips level.

As you inhale, come onto your fingertips, lengthen your spine, draw your navel in and open your chest.

As you exhale, walk your hands forward and lower your upper body towards the floor. You can rest your forearms and forehead on the mat.

Stay for 5 breaths or longer. On each exhalation, try to release the tension in your right hip.

To come out of the pose, push back through the hands, lift your hips and move your leg back into all fours. Repeat on the other side.

After you have completed the poses, practice being still by going into quiet mind. This is a time to let your mind be open to transformation. Any time your mind starts to wander, just simply bring it back by saying one of the affirmations above again, then return your awareness to quiet mind. After a few minutes of quiet mind, you may slowly bring your attention back to your surroundings and prepare to move on to the next chapter.
